Landlord May Not Decline an Applicant Because of a History of Drug Abuse, Alcoholism or Mental Problems

Fair Housing does not allow us to ask applicants about PREVIOUS drug, alcohol or

mental problems. We are allowed to ask if they PRESENTLY have any of these

problems; but, the question itself will get us few honest replies from most of the very

people we are screening against.

Governor Agrees Landlords Are Not Immigration Cops

 

Governor Schwarzenegger, agreeing that landlords should not be forced to serve as de

facto immigration cops, signed AB 976 into law. The new law goes into effect on January
